Giovanni's Restaurant, in Cardiff City centre is at the heart of the Café Quarter and is conveniently located opposite the St Davids 2 shopping centre & John Lewis. It's also just minutes from all national rugby & football stadiums, theatres and arenas.
Giovanni was born in Reggio Calabria on the toe of Italy, south of Naples and opposite Sicily. He moved to Wales with his mother and sister Francesca at the age of three as his father, Domenico, was working at a local steel works. His family was not involved in the catering business until his father bought a fish and chip shop, “Malacrinos”, in Cornwall Street, Grangetown, that’s when Mamma Lina came in and took Grangetown by storm adding an Italian dimension to the British tradition.
The business however, was not for him but the catering industry was in his DNA and while working at a city center restaurant he was quickly promoted to the kitchen. After years of training he secured a job aboard a luxury cruise liners sailing in the Caribbean, West Indies and USA. During his time on the ships, he took care of Ron Bird and his family, whose friendship later led them to open a restaurant together in Colts Neck New Jersey, USA called the Fox and Hounds, which marked the beginning of a highly successful career in the hospitality and catering industry for Giovanni.

Giovanni will always be grateful to the Ron Bird family for giving him his first ever opportunity in business because of this Giovanni has become passionate about life coaching and personal development and helps allot of people achieve their goals.
Giovanni has been running successful businesses for over 30 years and was the pioneer of the First ever purpose built café Quarter in the UK as well as the first to invest in Cardiff’s now famous Mill Lane. His restaurant and bars, The Continental, Gio’s Latinos were the infamous Celebrity haunts called. Which opened in the 2000’s went on to become one of the city’s most renowned establishments and VIP nightclub, No.10’s, was the favorite haunt of the stars when in the city. Both of Giovanni’s enjoys a bit of TV stardom and his children have followed in his footsteps whereas Giovanni has looked after celebrities and actors his son Gianluca is now an up and coming actor in LA and his daughter Ileana is in media and communication, a name to remember.
Today Giovanni with his sister Francesca owns two highly successful Italian restaurants, which have become synonymous with offering good quality, authentic Italian food and first class service. At Giovanni’s customers and staff are treated like family and the food is as good ‘as mamma used to make’. Testament to the success, Giovanni’s on The Hayes is proud to be the longest established independent Italian restaurant in the city, having served satisfied customers since 1983.
